The Project OHO

From OHO - search engine for sustainable open hardware projects

The Project OHO

OHO is established as a community-based joint project, which is funded by the Technical University of Berlin and the non-profit association Open Source Ecology Germany e.V. (Berlin). We consider ourselves a "little Wikipedia" for free technical knowledge, especially in the domain of sustainability.

OHO is embedded in a network of organizations in the fields of - Open Source Hardware (OSH) or Open Hardware (OH) - Open Knowledge - Do it Yourself (DIY) – FabLabs / Maker Spaces - Sustainability - Development Cooperation (DC)

Together we work on technical solutions that help to design a more ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable world. OHO currently consists of both the OHO Search Engine and OHO Assessment Platform.

Goal

The goal of OHO is to provide good technical solutions, especially in the field of sustainability:

  1. Collection and research
  2. Examination and evaluation
  3. Documentation based on norms and standards
  4. Publish and make it available as free technical knowledge

Therefore, we are working on establishing a strong and diverse open hardware community that supports the further development of OHO. OHO addresses the following target groups:

1.Individual who..

  • want to re-establish projects for his/her own needs
  • want to develop existing projects further

2.Startups, Small or Medium-sized companies (SMEs), that…

  • want to reengineer existing products
  • would like to implement further development based on existing projects

3.Organizations from the following areas:

  • Open Source Hardware, Do it Yourself, Maker Movement, etc.
  • Sustainable development
  • Development cooperation, Development aid xxx

Vision Our vision is to establish a Wikipedia for technical knowledge, in which an international community of people interested in technology will work together to collect, catalog, prepare, and document sustainable technical knowledge, to promote it globally.

What have we achieved so far?

The following milestones have been reached so far (2019-2020):

  • Development of DIN SPEC 3105 in cooperation with the German Institute for Standardization (2019-2020)
  • Development of the OHO Assessment Platform (2019-2020)
  • Development of OHO guidelines for technical documentation of open hardware (2020)

Our future plans

The following milestones are planned for 2020 and 2021:

  • Development of a certification body for sustainable do-it-yourself and open hardware projects (2020)
  • Documentation and certification of Covid-19 and renewable energy projects (2020-2021)
  • The medium-term goal of OHO is to research and complete, as many solid DIY and open hardware projects with a background of sustainability as possible, and to make them available free of charge to a global audience.
