Property | Evaluator | Comments | Score |
Operational safety | Evaluator1: | thehunter: In the video it is not possible to see if there is an automatic shutdown in case of strong wind. Possibly via the generators. It is a very professional construction, so I assume that there is an automatic shutdown. The construction looks very stable. The additional lashings with wire ropes give additional use stiffness. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: It appears to be a professional design, I would recommend a protective cover for the transmission and electrical system. Also the necessary signage as it is noted that its use is at ground level, where there may be foot traffic. | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Durabilityist | Evaluator1: | thehunter: All components seem to be made of stainless steel. The structure seems adequately sized. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: The selected components are durable. | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Investment cost | Evaluator1: | thehunter: I assume that because of the use of stainless steel the manufacturing cost is quite high. | 2 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: The materials and industrial processes observed will increase the total amount of the investment | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Supply of materials, standard and purchased components | Evaluator1: | thehunter: The purchased parts, i.e. electrics, alternator, pulleys, V-belts et cetera seem to be commercially available components. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: Depending on the locality, there may be cases where stainless steel sheets may be difficult to locate. | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Manufacturing processes / Manufacturing quality | Evaluator1: | thehunter: The constructor of thi sproject needs to have experience in working with stainless steel. | 2 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: Certain equipment such as sheet benders is required, product quality is very good | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Suitable for reverse engineering | Evaluator1:
Evaluator2: | xtech: Yes, only some reference data is required but the images seem adequate | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Others | Evaluator1: | thehunter: Apparently it is a very professional and sophisticated design, but also quite expensive due to the materials used.
Evaluator2: | xtech: Ground level use reduces wind speed utilization | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Recommendations | Evaluator1: | thehunter: Consider whether stainless steel really has to be used everywhere. | - |

Important comments | A hub motor from an e-bike would work better because you don't have to translate it so much. The powered generator stores its energy in lead gel batteries and is then used for lighting etc when needed. |

Operational safety | Evaluator1: | thehunter: The developer says that the project survived one of the strongest storms ever in Germany without damage. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: I suggest a support frame so as not to depend structurally only on the axis of rotation cantilevered. | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Durabilityist | Evaluator1: | thehunter: The materials used seem to be okay for outdoor use. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: Appears to be a durable design | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Investment cost | Evaluator1: | thehunter: Iseems to be a relatively inexpensive construction. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: Excellent design simplification and consequent investment reduction | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Supply of materials, standard and purchased components | Evaluator1: | thehunter: Only materials or components that are easy to preserve seem to have been used here. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: They are accessible materials, the metallic sheet appears to be made of galvanized steel. | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Manufacturing processes / Manufacturing quality | Evaluator1: | thehunter: It is not clear how the sheets of the rotor blades were joined. But otherwise, no expensive or sophisticated Manufacturing processes seem to have been used. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: Feasible for a DIY type process | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Suitable for reverse engineering | Evaluator1:
Evaluator2: | xtech: With the general measurements indicated and some references for the internal components, it is possible to apply reverse engineering. | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Others | Evaluator1: | thehunter: The vertical axis is attached directly to the roof structure of the house with two ball bearings. This is energetically unfavorable, because the roof creates strong turbulence in the air flow, which significantly reduces energy efficiency.to solve this problem would have to design and build a completely new rack, preferably with a height of several meters. If someone wants to mount a Savonius rotor directly on his peaked roof, then this is certainly a good solution. | 2 |

Operational safety | Evaluator1: | thehunter: It is not clear from the video whether the construction also provides sufficient safety in high winds or during storms. The construction seems to be made of galvanized steel pipe and, which at first glance seem a bit thin, but this can be deceiving. | 2 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: The structure appears to be stable but the profiles used could fail under unforeseen loads or fatigue, creating a risk to people. | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Durabilityist | Evaluator1: | thehunter: by using cut out 200 l tin barrels the construction looks a bit unprofessional. However, the tin drums have good stability and insensitivity to corrosion, if properly treated. Galvanized steel pipes is quite suitable as a material for the construction. The craftsmanship is not very clean, but that does not matter for the assessment. | 2 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: Metal parts should have a corrosion protection, it is also good to know the characteristics of the pump used to evaluate durability. | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Investment cost | Evaluator1: | thehunter: This is clearly a very low cost design, it is probably not possible to build a Savonius wind turbine much cheaper. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: Apparently the materials are mostly recycled, this greatly reduces the investment | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Supply of materials, standard and purchased components | Evaluator1: | thehunter: All materials and components seem to be readily available. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: The materials are very easy to acquire | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Manufacturing processes / Manufacturing quality | Evaluator1: | thehunter: No special Manufacturing processes are used. | 3 |
Evaluator2: | xtech: The manufacturing processes are DIY or handmade, the product quality could be improved. | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Suitable for reverse engineering | Evaluator1:
Evaluator2: | xtech: Reverse engineering is feasible | 3
Evaluator3: | |||
Others | Evaluator1: | thehunter:
Evaluator2: | xtech: The stroke of the long bar and the frequency of its movement must be defined, as this affects the selection of the pump if it is purchased. | 2
Evaluator3: | |||
Recommendations | Evaluator1: | thehunter: buy some weatherproof metal paint for the halved trash barrels, and the project looks much better right away | - |
Evaluator2: | xtech: It is a project made for ornamental purposes, adjustments can be made to develop it for water supply purposes, this could include a reserve tank above | -
